Q1. Tell us about your journey into fashion?
Answer:
From the childhood I was inclined towards creativity and chose to pursue my passion via fashion designing. I completed my designing course from IIFT, Agra in 2006. I have also done some modelling assignments in the past including a modeling assignment for a very famous brand of traditional wears. Immediately after my completion of graduation, I got married and I couldn't continue my work professionally for some years, but I never gave up on my dreams, I continued designing clothes for myself and some close family friends.
In 2012, I got the confidence to design professionally and developed a clothing brand by the name of "Bespoke By Richa Kila.". Today, I am running a full fledged boutique from my home and keep sharing my collection via exhibition and social media.
I want to share with your readers that it doesn’t matter how difficult a dream looks, keep working on it by taking small steps. As they say Rome wasn’t built in a day
For eg, initially I didn't even have a boutique of my own, so I used to keep my designed clothes in briefcases and cartons. Finding out time was a challenge of its own when you are raising kids along with your business. I work double shift to ensure that I give time to my family responsibilities and take out time for my business as well. Initially, didn't have enough business to keep a full time tailor, so to keep expenses low and costs variable, found tailors to do business on a piecemeal basis. Also, I have always believed in making the business profitable so that it can grow sustainably without putting pressure on family finances, so instead of spending money on costly exhibitions, I used social media extensively to build a loyal base of customers and scaled up my venture gradually based on the feedback received..
Q2. Who supported you in your venture?
Answer: Initially I was hesitant to start my work again and found myself occupied with family duties and looking after my kids. But my husband & in-laws supported me. They encouraged me to do work in different styles and even helped me with the marketing of the brand on social media platforms. Also my family and friends were a great support.
Q3. Your Strength and weakness
Answer: Before I talk about my strength I would talk about my weakness. My biggest weakness was my fear of not doing great. But I took little steps in creating this brand which helped me to overcome this fear. My greatest strength is my creativity and passion. Creating beautiful designs gives me a sense of fulfillment.
Q4. What are your future plans?
I believe enjoying the present with a sight over the future goals also. I plan to create a brand with which anyone can associate and find something close to their heart. I just believe we are here to create something beautiful in this world and I intend to keep doing it through my designs.
I continue to expand my collection by designing Men’s clothing as well as well as fashionable masks in corona times. I intend to help other budding fashion designers startup on their own and share my experiences with them in scaling up their ventures. Also I have a little dream that I design something for sweet Alia Bhatt for any of her upcoming movies.
